Darren Black

Associate Lecturer - Acting for Film

About

Darren trained at Middlesex University where he gained a degree in Performing Arts, graduating in 1995. He went on to work as an actor in television and theatre. His TV credits included The Bill (ITV), Law and Order (ITV), Down to Earth (BBC) and The Somme (BBC). As an actor in the theatre Darren worked in touring productions (Forest Forge Theatre Company), in Rep (Coventry Belgrade) and at the Edinburgh Festival (The Pleasance theatre directed by David Grindley).

After ten years as a jobbing actor Darren joined Anthony Field Associates (West End Theatre Producers), where he worked as an Associate. He was responsible for scouting for new shows and supporting the producers in all their theatrical endeavours in London’s West End and Broadway. He also produced and directed a radio play (The Essays of Elia) staring Derek Jacobi.

He joined the University of Chichester as an Associate Lecturer in 2017, teaching acting technique based on both his experience in the industry in the UK and his time in Los Angeles collaborating with one of the industry’s top acting coaches.

Darren is also a writer and has written and directed numerous corporate films. He has also written and directed several Acting for Film productions including ‘Dad’, a family drama, ‘Reset’, a romantic comedy and ‘Apocalypse High’, a post-apocalyptic-zombie-comedy-murder-mystery (an all-encompassing genre!). He is presently taking that concept and expanding it into an eight-episode series. He continues to write other screenplays for TV and film as well as for the University and Corporate organisations.

When not teaching and writing, Darren provides private coaching to actors and other creatives, and travels the world teaching inter-personal communication and enhanced behavioural skills.
