University installs advanced new disinfection system to eliminate viruses from classroom

A new state-of-the-art disinfection system which eliminates viruses and other harmful particles has been installed at the University of Chichester.

The technology, which uses short-wavelength UV light to kill 99.9 per cent of pathogens, was fitted in the recording studios of the institution’s £35million Tech Park. It sanitises shared equipment used by students from its games, audio, and animation degrees without having to wipe-down ultramodern electronic devices between use.

Vernon Francis, senior creative digital technologies technician at the University, said: “Our recording studio is a very busy space, used for everything from undergraduate and masters level teaching to voiceover and band recording sessions, as well as orchestral recordings by external clients.

“Before installing the UV-C lamps, there was a sense of trepidation from users of the space – did the previous user mitigate infection risks sufficiently when working? Now, when we show how we can sanitise the recording suite, everyone – students, staff and external clients, are amazed at the system’s efficiency and speed.”

The new system, from technology experts Uvisan, was installed by the University as part of its ongoing Covid-19 control measures. The Tech Park, which houses the professional audio recording studios, includes a dedicated 75 square-metre green screen stage, alongside nine editing suites, and live room with screening theatre.

Chichester has also acquired five UV-C disinfection cabinets to store shared electronic hardware, VR headsets, computer peripherals and tablets to be quickly and effectively disinfected.

Uvisan’s David Marks said: “The state-of-the-art recording studio is a key resource for many students, and it is fantastic to see that Cleanroom by Uvisan is now playing a part in restoring some level of normality at Chichester, helping the University provide re-assurance to staff and students and optimising learning by ensuring key equipment can be safely used again.”
