Overview

Convert to study Law and prepare for your career in the legal profession

Law exists to regulate pretty much everything we do, which is why it remains such a relevant and fascinating subject to study.

Our Master of Laws (LLM) degree will enable students who have achieved a degree in a subject other than Law to study the foundations of legal knowledge.

This will enable you to meet the academic stage to qualify as a Barrister and provide legal understanding for the first Solicitors’ Qualifying Examination (SQE), for those who want to progress to a career in the legal profession.

Choose your route

You can choose to study our LLM Law Conversion course with or without the preparation for the SQE exam.

You will need to indicate when applying which route you would like to take as it will affect the cost of your course.

The Course

Study the foundations of legal knowledge

Taught in small groups you will develop your research, academic writing, critical thinking and employability skills.

You will also complete a dissertation on an area of your choice, supported by our expert academics.

At the end of your Master’s degree, you will have the option to complete a specialist preparation course for the first Solicitors’ Qualifying Examination.

Contract Law

This module introduces you to the different aspects of contract law. You will study the nature of contract law and the fundamental elements of contract. You will develop an understanding of contract terms, parties to a contract, vitiating factors, termination of a contract and remedies.

Criminal Law

This module introduces you to the different aspects of criminal law. You will examine the theory underpinning criminal law and the elements of criminal liability. You will develop an understanding of a range of criminal offences and be able to analyse and evaluate related case law.

English Legal System and Research Methods

This module introduces you to the different aspects of the English legal system and legal research methods. You will examine the different ways laws are made and interpreted in court, as well as how the system of precedent operates. You will form an understanding of the different personnel and courts within the English legal system and how effectively these operate. You will also develop legal research skills and identify different legal research methodology.

Equity and Trusts

In this module, you will study how the law of equity was developed, express and implied trusts, the fiduciary relationship, trustees’ duties, powers and liability, and the different equitable remedies. You will also examine the rules relating to wills, intestacy, probate and administration of estates.

EU Law

This module introduces you to European Union law and impetus behind the formation of the European Union. You will examine the law-making institutions of the European Union, the different sources of EU law and the fundamental freedoms provided by EU law. You will examine the impact of the different types of EU laws on the enforceability of an individual’s legal rights and the impact on EU law on the UK’s constitution.

Independent Research Project

This module enables students to work on an independent research project to pursue specialist interests.

Land Law

In this module, you will study how land is classified, the different legal and equitable interests in land, the conveyancing process and the core principles of planning law.

Public Law

In this module you will study the different aspects of Constitutional, Administrative and Human Rights Law. You will examine the nature and the structure of the UK Constitution, the law regulating the administration of power and the provisions for the protection of human rights.

Tort Law

This module introduces you to the concept of Tort Law and a range of torts including negligence, product liability, occupiers’ liability, and nuisance, as well as the relevant defences and remedies and the principle of vicarious liability. You will also consider the rules and procedures for dispute resolution.

Gain practical advocacy experience in our new mooting room

Our new purpose-built mooting room gives you the space to develop the skills needed to argue logically, confidently, and persuasively.

Preparation for SQE

Dedicated support for new postgraduate examinations for solicitors

The way to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales has changed through the introduction of a new postgraduate examination process known as the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations, known as SQE 1 and SQE 2.

If you choose to study the LLM with SQE preparation, you will be given dedicated support in preparing for SQE 1, which you can sit externally after completing your course.

Support will include:

  • Dedicated SQE resources taking you through all elements of the SQE specification.
  • Skills development to assist you in studying, revising and sitting the SQE examination.
  • Access to more than 1,200 multiple-choice questions and mock examinations designed to mirror the format of the SQE.

There are multiple routes for the LLM for UK students:

  • Option 1 is LLM only at £10,440
  • Option 2 is LLM with SQE preparation at £12,960.

If you want to sit the SQE exam, then this can be booked and paid for at a Pearson’s assessment centre externally. There is a cost for UK students  –  find out more on the Solicitors Regulation Authority website.

University of Chichester alumni who have completed a full undergraduate degree at the University will receive a 15% discount on their postgraduate fees.

Student Loan Funding

Students looking to apply for a postgraduate loan for this course will need to select the ‘LLM Law Conversion’ option on the Student Loans Company website.

Please be aware that although the SQE element of this course is not eligible for student loan funding, the loan amount is enough to cover the tuition fees for both the LLM and SQE.

If an applicant has a non-UK degree and intends to qualify as a barrister, they should also have a certificate of academic standing from the Bar Standards Board.
