The University of Chichester has awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity to His All-Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and spiritual leader of more than 300 million Orthodox Christians worldwide.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential religious leaders of the modern era, His All-Holiness has dedicated his life to theological scholarship, pastoral leadership, interfaith understanding and the promotion of peace, justice and environmental responsibility.
His All-Holiness has spent decades building understanding between different Christian traditions and faith communities, while also becoming a leading voice on environmental issues, human rights and religious freedom.
Since becoming Ecumenical Patriarch in 1991, Bartholomew has worked to strengthen relationships across the Orthodox Church and encourage closer dialogue between Christians of different denominations. He has also been a strong advocate for cooperation between people of different faiths, promoting respect, understanding and peaceful coexistence.
Known internationally as the “Green Patriarch”, Bartholomew was one of the first major religious leaders to highlight the moral importance of protecting the environment. Through international conferences, partnerships with scientists and public advocacy, he has helped bring greater attention to the connection between faith and environmental responsibility.
Alongside this work, he has consistently spoken out in support of human rights, religious freedom and the dignity of all people. Throughout his ministry, he has championed the rights of vulnerable communities and encouraged dialogue in places affected by division and conflict.
A respected scholar who has studied in Türkiye, Rome, Switzerland and Germany, Bartholomew has received numerous international honours and honorary degrees. His commitment to learning, leadership and service reflects values that are central to the University of Chichester, including global citizenship, respect for diversity and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
In awarding the honorary doctorate, the University is recognising Bartholomew’s outstanding contribution to theological leadership, interfaith understanding, environmental stewardship and the promotion of peace and human dignity.
