Peacekeeping in Africa: Senior Lecturer’s new book provides comprehensive analysis of continent

A NEW book providing a comprehensive analysis of peacekeeping in Africa has been co-edited by a Senior Lecturer at the University of Chichester.

Peacekeeping in Africa: The Evolving Security Architecture was published by Dr Marco Wyss, previously a Senior Research Fellow in international security at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, who is now in charge of our new degree in Politics and Contemporary History.

Co-edited by Dr Thierry Tardy, from the European Union Institute for Security Studies, the book draws on contributions from a range of key thinkers in the field, and concentrates on significant actors who are involved in the attempt to bring peace to the African continent. It also explores the main operational theatres, assessing the evolution of the African security architecture, and how it impacts on peace operations.

Dr Wyss said the book provides an analysis of the trends and challenges of international peacekeeping in Africa, focusing on the recent expansion of actors and missions. He added: “Recent events in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, and the Central African Republic remind us that violence remains endemic and continues to hamper the institutional, social and economic development of the African continent.

“Over the years an increasing number of actors have become involved in the effort to bring peace to Africa, meanwhile, traditional and emerging powers have regained an interest in Africa and, as a consequence, in peacekeeping. This book will be of much interest to students of peacekeeping and peace operations, African politics, war and conflict studies, security studies and IR.”
