What to and what NOT to bring to accommodation!

Getting ready to move into university accommodation this September?
Deciding what to take and leave at home can feel impossible, with different sources providing conflicting information on what is and isn’t allowed.
Whether you’re staying in halls, a shared flat or student housing, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list to help make your new space feel like home.
What to bring
Bedroom Â
Your room is your sanctuary, so it’s important to make sure it’s both cosy and functional. You’ll need:
- Bedding: Duvet, pillows, bed sheets, and a mattress protector.
- Clothes hangers: You’ll probably need more than you think!
- Laundry basket or bag: Something that will be easy to carry to the laundry room.
- Â Desk lamp: This will be essential for late-night study sessions.
- Extension lead: You may not need it, but it’s always good to have just in case.
- Storage boxes: Great for under-bed or wardrobe space.
KitchenÂ
If you’re cooking for yourself, you’ll need the basics:
- Plates, bowls, mugs and glasses: One or two of each is typically enough.
- Cutlery and utensils: Forks, knives, spoons, spatulas, peelers, etc.
- Pots and pans: One small, one big should be fine!
- Chopping board and Tupperware: For meal prep and leftovers.
- Tea towels and dishcloths: Having a few on rotation should be fine.
- Can opener and bottle opener: You’ll thank us later!
- Kettle/toaster: Check if your accommodation already provides these.
BathroomÂ
Even if you’re sharing a bathroom, you’ll want your own:
- Towels: At least two sets (one for use and one for laundry day!)
- Toiletries: Shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
- Toilet roll: Bring a few to get started.
- Shower caddy: Handy for carrying your stuff to and from the bathroom.
StudyÂ
Our favourite part…it’s time to hit the stationery shops! We recommend bringing:
- Laptop and charger.
- Notebook, pens and highlighters.
- Folders and binders.
- Sticky notes.
- Planner.
Clothes & Personal Items
Pack for all kinds of weather (this is the UK, after all):
- Every day clothes.
- Something smart.
- Gym gear.
- Raincoat and umbrella.
- Comfy shoes.
Home comforts and extras
Pinterest is the go-to place for room decor inspiration!
Taking the time to make your room feel like home can make all the difference when settling in. Bring things like:
- Photos.
- Fairy lights (battery powered, not plug-in!)
- Small plants (the less maintenance, the better!)
- Journal.
- Board games.
- Rug.
What NOT to bring
Knowing what not to bring is just as important as knowing what to pack!
Here’s a list of things you definitely don’t need to take with you:
- Candles or any other open flame products.
- Plug-in fairy lights.
- Rice cookers.
- Pets.
- Mini fridge.
You probably don’t need to take…
- Loads of books: Remember, you’ll have access to a library and online resources!
- Your entire wardrobe: Space is tight – pack seasonally and swap clothes during term breaks.
- Bulk toiletries: Every city has drugstores! You can buy all the necessities once you’re there – no need to lug it all with you.
