Award-winning dance choreographer and digital artist return to Chichester with new performance
- Company Flexer & Sandiland to perform live in Chichester for first time in two years
- Imagining Otherwise opens to audiences on Wednesday 2 March
- Performance explores people’s experiences of parallel time zones, spaces and lives reflecting on our digital communication through Covid pandemic
The creators of an award-winning dance company are returning to Chichester for their first UK live performance in nearly two years following a residency in Norway.
Interactive digital production Imagining Otherwise has been developed by choreographer Yael Flexer and installation artist Nic Sandiland throughout national lockdowns. The performance is being hosted at the University of Chichester on Wednesday 2 March.
Creators Dr Yael Flexer, a Reader in Dance at the University, and Nic Sandiland, lecturer and researcher at Middlesex University, and the company will be presenting the work live and online to audiences at 7pm.
Dr Flexer said: “Imagining Otherwise reflects on our experiences of parallel time zones, places, and lives. We explore the idea of multiple stories and possibilities using interactive imagery, akin to live charcoal drawing, to highlight notions of migration, transience, mark making and erasure.”
Interactive digital floor projections, shaped and changed by the dancers’ movement, are used throughout the production to create shifting organic landscapes.
Developed by the company with University of Chichester alumni dancers, and supported from South East Dance, Brighton, the production is interwoven with spoken text by writer Wendy Houstoun, features music by composer James Keane. Lighting is provided by Chichester lecturer Natalie Rowland and dramaturgy by academic Pete Phillips.
Tickets cost from £10 each – or viewed online from £6 – and can be purchased from www.dancetheatrespace.com.
The Dance Theatre Space is located at the University’s Bishop Otter campus, College Lane, Chichester West Sussex, PO19 6PE. It will be ventilated throughout the performance and audiences are encouraged to take a lateral flow test before arriving and wear facemasks while on campus.
