Chichester triumphs at Varsity 2026 against Winchester

Over 800 athletes compete across 24 sports as Chichester retains its winning streak.

The University of Chichester has emerged victorious at Varsity 2026, defeating the University of Winchester in one of the most anticipated events of the year for students at the two institutions.

More than 800 student athletes took part in a packed programme of 24 competitive events and fixtures, spanning sports such as rugby, football, American football, esports, dance and hockey. The day showcased the depth and ambition of university sport, with friendly rivalry throughout.

Chichester secured an overall score of 14–7, winning the majority of the competitive fixtures and retaining the Varsity title for a third consecutive year.

Winchester claimed victories in Netball, Netball 2, Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Basketball, while several other contests were played as friendlies, adding to the community‑focused nature of the day.

Richard Askey, Head of Student Experience at the University of Chichester Student Union, said: “Varsity is about community, teamwork and showcasing everything student sport and activities has to offer here at Chichester. We’re incredibly proud of all our athletes for the commitment, sportsmanship and passion they showed throughout the day”

Varsity is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar for both universities, bringing together athletes, coaches, supporters and volunteers for a full day of competition and celebration. Alongside established BUCS sports, the inclusion of disciplines such as esports, cheerleading and dance reflects the opportunities available to students.
