Writing for wellbeing sessions launch at Chichester Food Bank

Chichester District Food Bank is launching a new creative writing for wellbeing taster session this month, delivered in partnership with the University of Chichester as part of the National Year of Reading.

Designed especially for people who have used the food bank’s services, the session offers a welcoming space to explore creative writing in a relaxed environment. No previous experience is required, and participants are encouraged to work at their own pace.

The session will be led by Dr Suzanne Joinson, Creative Writing and Co‑Academic Lead in English and Creative Writing at the University, alongside a university support team. Participants will be guided through creative approaches such as short reflections, fast fiction, and autobiographical writing, with a focus on confidence, communication and wellbeing.

Keely Storey, Participation Manager at Chichester District Food Bank, said: “We’re really grateful to the University of Chichester’s creative writing team, and to Dr Suzanne Joinson, for giving their time to support our food bank customers. We hope these sessions will help people build confidence, develop creative writing and communication skills, and feel more comfortable sharing their own experiences. If the pilot is successful, we’d love to grow this into a supportive group shaped by people with lived experience of using our services, helping to ensure those voices remain at the heart of future campaigning and community work.”

The first session will take place on Thursday 14 May, 1–3pm, at Chichester District Food Bank. Refreshments will be provided.
