t.lynch@chi.ac.uk | 01243 816229

Dr Tommy Lynch is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy of Religion and the Programme Coordinator for the BA Philosophy and Ethics. He is interested in contemporary materialism as it applies to thinking about religion and politics. He has written on Hegel, Kierkegaard, psychoanalysis and liberation theology.

Professional

Dr Lynch has presented his research around the UK as well as in Belgium, Italy, Canada and the United States. He is a member of the Hegel Society of Great Britain and has presented his research at the American Academy of Religion and the Association for Continental Philosophy of Religion.

Research

Dr Lynch completed a PhD at Durham University, focusing on Hegel’s understanding of religion as representation, apocalypticism and the political theologies of Jacob Taubes and Ernst Bloch. It explored apocalypticism as a philosophical concept that enables us to think about the current state of the world and contemplate our uncertain future. His current research focuses on how contemporary theories of materialism might change understandings of religion. These theories require breaking down disciplinary boundaries between philosophy and other disciplines such as anthropology and social theory. He is particularly concerned with the political and social implications of these changes to thinking about religion.
