Joel Scott

Associate Lecturer for Musical Theatre

About

Joel specialises in creating epic, digital and site-specific work in the UK, and internationally.

He has been lucky enough to create large scale, complex site shows with 3rd Year students at Chichester University since 2012. With spaces including barns full of sheep, 10th century churches and lakes lit by moonlight, Musical Theatre Commission is a bold and innovative piece of programming by the University that he is proud to be part of.

Joel has been creating work with his own company Goat and Monkey since 2004, with award winning work that ranges from immersive performances and digital real-world treasure hunts for 80 000 players, to intimate studio shows helping children understand dementia, to sprawling large scale historical works at Royal Palaces.

His award winning adaptation of Macbeth is soon to embark on its third tour, this time to Canada. The Devil Speaks True uses wireless headphones, projection, scent, a physical performer and binaural sound design to plunge audiences into an intimate, 360 degree ex- perience, often in complete darkness.

Joel has been directing work for the National Youth Theatre since 2008. NYT productions include: Living The Dream for the World Expo in Shanghai, a digital and live action performance incorporating a real time digital link to a simultaneous performance on London’s South Bank, The Lost Child at the King Abdulaziz Centre of World Culture in Saudi Arabia, and Slick, a large scale show with 300 actors performed at Europe’s largest Housing estate.

He is just finished directing the world premiere of Flood in Hong Kong, an epic day modern tale of salvation; a bold and visceral telling of what happens when land turns to water. The 22 actors perform on a stage submerged under water.

Joel is a Creative Associate at Punchdrunk International, developing concepts for cutting edge immersive theatre projects both home and abroad.
