Literary success for Chichester author

A University of Chichester lecturer has been showered with positive reviews for his historical book about the Edwardians, Little Englanders, as he now prepares for it to be released in paperback.

Alwyn Turner, a Senior Lecturer in History at the University, says he is ‘delighted’ to have received high praise from The Daily Telegraph, The Observer and many more, with his title also being chosen as ‘Book of the Week’ in The Sunday Times

Describing the book as ‘richly enjoyable’, Dominic Sandbrook of The Sunday Times wrote that: “Other books about the Edwardians are available. But they are rarely as clever and not remotely such good fun. Above all, nobody has done a better job of capturing what ordinary people thought and cared about more than a century ago.”

Meanwhile, Christopher Bray of The Daily Mail said: “Little Englanders hums and thrums to the texture and tone of everyday Edwardian life,” and in The Literary Review, Piers Brendon wrote: “Alwyn Turner has achieved the remarkable feat of shedding new light on the Edwardian era … his research is impressive and [Little Englanders] is consistently stimulating.”

Alwyn said: “I’ve been delighted by the reception from critics and readers. And now the paperback is coming out on 2 January – the perfect start to the New Year.”

Little Englanders was published in February this year, and the paperback will be published on 2 January 2025. The current edition of The Bookseller has included it as their featured paperback for January.
