UK-US relationship celebrated as Vice-Chancellor joins largest ever trade mission

The University of Chichester took to the international stage this week, as Vice-Chancellor Professor Symeon Dagkas joined the largest ever trade mission to the USA. His participation highlights the institution’s growing global reach and commitment to international partnerships.
Professor Dagkas was one of a select group of UK university leaders representing British higher education in the prestigious Greater Together expo in Los Angeles, which took place from May 18 to 22.
The event, led by MPs Lisa Nandy and Blair McDougall, brought together a delegate of 250 UK and US business leaders, visionary founders and global decision-makers to explore new opportunities, and Professor Dagkas went through a rigorous selection process to become one of the UK academics chosen to participate.

Professor Dagkas said: “This visit is a fantastic opportunity to explore new avenues for collaborations in teaching, research and student exchange. As a University, we want to connect with institutions who share our commitment to the arts, performance, sport, media and creative industries, and we see the potential to expand our international reach. The UK’s higher education sector is a significant national asset, and I am incredibly proud to represent it.”
The Vice-Chancellor was also part of a small group of senior representatives from UK and US universities taking part in a British-Council led Higher Education sector dialogue, a focused conversation under the theme: Reputation Building in a Changing and Challenging World. The invite-only session explored what US and UK institutions can learn from one another and discussed shared challenges and opportunities.
Professor Dagkas attended multiple briefings and panel events, including the Sport Networking Breakfast which was introduced by Rupert Daniels, Director of Services at the Department for Business and Trade.

Successful US-UK collaboration benefits both nations, creating jobs, driving technological breakthroughs and supporting prosperity. His Majesty the King sent a video message to all delegates, recognising the importance of cross-Atlantic relationships and reaffirming support for the GREAT Britain & Northern Ireland Campaign.
Lisa Nandy MP spoke about the UK’s strength in creative industries, including film, AI, immersive gaming and live experiences, and highlighted the vital role that universities play in investing in future storytellers and creative talent.
Professor Dagkas said: “It was good to hear Lisa’s insights on the creative industries as it is one of Chichester’s key disciplines. Attending Greater Together and connecting with key figures from the entertainment sector was a real opportunity to ensure we are aligned with industry priorities and strengthen our international profile. It also supports the exchange of knowledge and ideas, attracts investment and enables us to continue to provide strong future pathways for our students.”
