Abi Mortimer

Senior Lecturer, Contemporary Dance

Abi co-founded Lila Dance in 2006, and received arts council funding to create 8 works on the company, that have undergone national & rural tours and international performances and festivals. She has made award winning dance films that have received nation wide screenings and has extended her practice in delivering integrated professional work through research with StopGap. 

Abi has a  first-class degree  at BA and MA  level  in dance  from  the University of Chichester  (UoC) and won  the Hayes Award  for her contribution  to  the arts. In her early career she received choreographic mentorship from Hofesh Shechter and amongst others has danced for Yael Flexer, Charlie Morrissey and Detta Howe.

She has established  collaborations with a range of international artists from various disciplines  including Simona Bertozzi (Italy),  Jon Maya (Spain), International puppetry  company  Blind  Summit, Gary Clarke and writer Nick Walker.  Abi is regularly engaged in developing dance in educational settings and choreographed the set dance for the GCSE Dance syllabus which she delivered all over the U.K to teachers and students.

She is a senior lecturer at University of Chichester and has a passion for extended her practice to creatively engage the community, regularly producing commissions for participants of all ages and abilities.

Her commissioned work has shown at many high profile venues and events including Sadler's Wells, The Roundhouse, The Place, U.Dance Finals, Laban, Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Abi regularly delivers professional class across the south of England and in London.
