Overview
Gain Qualified Teacher Status in primary or secondary education via the Assessment Only Route
Since September 2012, we have offered the highly successful Assessment Only Route, giving suitably qualified and experienced candidates the opportunity to gain Qualified Teacher Status without the need for extensive training.
Gaining QTS will enable you to teach in any school in the country whether state-maintained, independent or an academy.
For Assessment Only, the assessment phase would normally last up to 12 weeks after successful completion of the Initial Assessment Visit by a university assessor.
Candidates need to meet Department for Education (DfE) compliancy criteria and required teaching experience.
There is no expectation of training within this route; however, the school is expected to give high levels of professional guidance and support.
This route covers a large geographical area including:
- Dorset
- Hampshire
- Isle of Wight
- West Sussex
- Surrey.
Long and distinguished history of teacher training
Chichester has a long and distinguished history in teacher training at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and is renowned for academic excellence and student satisfaction.
Our Institute of Education is recognised nationally as a centre of excellence for teacher education and research development.
Such a positive outcome would not have been achieved without the vital contribution that school-based colleagues (mentors, professional tutors, class teachers, headteachers) make on a regular basis to the partnership.
The commitment we share in shaping, educating and training the next generation of teachers forms the basis for continued high-quality ITT provision at Chichester.

The Assessment Only Route is a fantastic opportunity to nurture high-quality staff and provide them with a pathway to achieve their QTS whilst still remaining in the school setting.

Music teacher
Although the Assessment Only Route is very intensive, it is an extremely rewarding way of gaining QTS. It gives you the opportunity to hone your skills in the classroom whilst building up relationships with colleagues and students in a very supportive environment.

Completing the Assessment Only Route into teaching has allowed me to gain and hone skills which are integral in the teaching profession in a school setting. These skills have enabled me to progress rapidly to being appointed both a Head of Year and a Learning and Teaching Ambassador within a short period of time. The Assessment Only Route also gave me the opportunity to receive support and guidance from my school, the financial security of working full time, the chance to find my voice in the classroom and get acclimatised to the fast-paced nature of a school environment, all whilst achieving QTS.
