About

Emily White is a Postgraduate Associate contributing across multiple programmes within the School of Nursing and Allied Health. She teaches Population Health for BSc and MSc Physiotherapy and serves as an Associate Lecturer for Sport, where she supports the exercise referral module and the uCHAMP programme – student-led exercise classes for adults living with pulmonary conditions. She also contributes to Nursing, particularly in public health, and supports simulation development across allied health disciplines.

Emily has been part of the University of Chichester community since 2016, beginning as an undergraduate student. Throughout her academic and professional journey, she has developed a strong passion for health, wellbeing, and physical activity. Research

Emily’s research interests centre around the relationship between physical activity and health outcomes in individuals living with chronic conditions, such as obesity, pulmonary, and cardiac diseases.

She is particularly interested in evaluating and improving sustainable, community-based interventions – like the uCHAMP programme – that can positively impact long-term health and wellbeing.

She also supports research into the student experience within in-house university placements and contributes to the development of simulation-based learning in allied health education.

PhD

Emily’s doctoral research focuses on physical activity preconditioning for adults living with obesity, specifically in the context of bariatric surgery.

Her work explores how tailored physical activity preconditioning can improve readiness for surgery and enhance overall health outcomes, particularly by improving physical fitness.

Emily is conducting a baseline study to assess current levels of physical activity in this population group, followed by qualitative interviews to explore the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, and Behaviour) and how it relates to physical activity participation.

In addition, she is reviewing the most appropriate FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type) principles for physical activity in this context.

The overall aim of Emily’s research is to develop and present a recommended preconditioning intervention to patients living with obesity prior to surgery.
