“The access I’ve had to such prestigious academics has been incredible – more than I expected when I first enrolled”

Choosing a university involves more than picking a course; it’s about finding a community that suits you.

In this blog, we chat to Tate, a Sport and Exercise Psychology student, to find out why he believes Chichester is a great place to grow, both academically and personally.

Why did you choose to come to Chichester?

It seemed like a small, tight-knit community, which really appealed to me. On top of that, the University was highly regarded in the league tables for sports science, so it felt like a perfect fit.

What are the tutors like on your course?

It’s insane! I’ve been able to build professional relationships with some real legends in the field.

Whenever I have questions, I can reach out to the literal founders and figureheads of specific theories.

The access I’ve had to such prestigious academics has been incredible – much more than I expected when I first enrolled.

What are the facilities/equipment like on your course?

During my undergrad in Sports Science and my master’s in Sports Psychology, I’ve had access to some incredible facilities.

These include a brain imaging lab and a 3D motion capture biomechanics lab. For my dissertation, I even used the university’s environmental chamber, which can simulate temperatures ranging from -25ºC to +50ºC, varying humidity, and altitude—such a cool resource for creating real-world conditions for my research!

Do you feel part of a community here?

The sense of community at Chichester is outstanding.

Beyond the tight-knit student body, the academic staff are exceptional.

I regularly find myself chatting with my physiology lecturers in the canteen about their race seasons or my nutrition lecturers about the teams they’re working with this year. I never feel like a stranger here.

What does Sport and Exercise Psychology mean to you? Why is it important?

Sport and Exercise Psychology is part of who I am now. When I first came to university, I wasn’t even sure I could call myself academic, given my performance in my GCSEs.

However, through the support of my tutors, lecturers and friends, I’ve been given the tools and opportunities to transform my identity completely.

It’s been a journey of growth, and I’m proud of the person I’ve become in the process.

Are you part of any societies or sports teams? What’s it like being a part of one?

I was involved with the American football team. I started as a regular player and then took on roles like Secretary, Kit Officer, and Vice President.

Turning the team around after a five and a half year losing streak was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.

It wasn’t just about the wins – it was about bonding over the challenges and making friends along the way.

What would you say to someone thinking about coming to the University of Chichester?

It’s a big decision, so make sure to think it through!

We can show you all the great things the University has to offer, but ultimately, it’s about finding the place where you feel you belong. And honestly, I think you’d fit right in here!

Did you come to an Open Day? If so, what do you remember most about the day?

Yes, I did! What stood out to me the most was being able to visit the labs.

They had state-of-the-art facilities on display, and I had the chance to talk to lecturers who are literally celebrities in their fields.

It felt like such a unique opportunity to get hands-on and chat with experts, all for free!

Do you have any top tips for attending an Open Day?

Definitely explore everything, even if it’s not related to your course!

If you play sports, check out the free injury clinic for students. If you’re into music, take a look at the performance spaces and practice rooms.

Your course does not limit what you can access through societies, clubs and personal bookings.
