What Should I Bring to University?

Joining us this September? Let’s get you packed and ready!

Figuring out what to bring to university can feel overwhelming – especially if you’re the sentimental type.

To make things easier, we’ve put together a handy checklist of everything you’ll actually need – from bedroom, bathroom and kitchen must-haves to essential documents.

Plus, we’ll help you avoid overpacking by highlighting what’s best to leave at home.

What to do before you arrive

Preparation is key to a smooth start to university.

To make sure your first few weeks run as smoothly as possible, there are a few essential things you’ll need to do.

Before you arrive, it’s a good idea to start gathering any required documentation. You may be asked to provide:

  • Entry qualification certificates.
  • A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
  • Proof of identity.

To avoid any last-minute panic, follow our Before You Arrive Essentials checklist, which lists things like:

  • Uploading a photo for your campus card via ChiView.
  • Completing your online registration via ChiView.
  • Registering your IT account and completing your start-of-year induction via ChiView.
  • Setting up your password self-service via ChiView.
  • Checking your ChiView portal for any department-specific information.

Essentials to bring to university

Packing for university can feel overwhelming, but a little planning goes a long way.

Here’s a breakdown of what might be useful to bring to help you settle in smoothly.

Kitchen

What you’ll need will depend on your accommodation type.

If you’re in self-catered halls, it’s a good idea to join our Facebook Applicant Group to connect with your future flatmates – some may be happy to share items like kettles and toasters.

Start with the basics:

  • Saucepans and frying pans
  • Cutlery, plates, bowls and mugs
  • Chopping boards and cooking utensils
  • Food storage containers for leftovers and packed lunches
  • A small kettle or toaster (check what’s already provided first!)

Bedroom

Your room is your personal retreat, so it’s worth making sure the space is both comfortable and functional.

You’ll want to pack:

  • A duvet, pillows and at least two sets of bedding
  • Clothes hangers and a laundry basket or bag
  • Storage solutions such as under-bed boxes or hanging organisers
  • A small mirror (if not provided)
  • Personal touches – such as photos, fairy lights, cushions or a cosy throw – to make the room feel more like home.

Bathroom

Whether you have en-suite or shared facilities, having your own bathroom essentials is essential.

Be sure to bring:

  • Towels (including hand and bath towels)
  • Toiletries: Shampoo and conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrush
  • A shower caddy for easy transportation
  • Bathroom cleaner and air freshener
  • A small organiser or basket to keep things tidy
