Am I Eligible to Apply Through Clearing?

Every year, thousands of students successfully find the right university course through Clearing.

Whether you didn’t quite get the results you were hoping for, have had a change of heart about your course or university, or are applying for the first time after the UCAS deadline, Clearing could be the ideal pathway to the right course, at the right university.

So, if you’re currently wondering – “Am I eligible to apply through Clearing?” – you’re in the right place.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through who can use Clearing, how it works, and the steps you can take to ensure your experience is as positive as possible.

How does university Clearing work?

Running from July until mid-October, Clearing is a process managed by UCAS that allows students to apply for university courses that still have vacancies after the June deadline has passed.

Once it opens, you can search for courses with vacancies, contact universities directly to express your interest, and, if they’re happy to offer you a place, add that choice to your UCAS application.

Who can use Clearing?

You may be eligible to apply through Clearing if:

  • You didn’t receive any offers

Didn’t get any offers—or declined the ones you had? You can find a new opportunity through Clearing.

  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your offers

If your results didn’t quite match your firm or insurance offers, you’ll automatically be entered into Clearing.

  • You declined your firm place

Changed your mind? If you’ve declined your place, Clearing lets you apply for something new.

  • You’re applying after 30 June

Late to the game? If you apply after this date, your application goes straight into Clearing.

Common Clearing myths

Clearing is often misunderstood, with many students hesitant to consider it because of outdated ideas or misconceptions.

Let’s break down some of the most common myths and set the record straight.

Clearing is only for students who've failed

This is one of the most common misconceptions about Clearing.

In truth, students use Clearing for a wide range of reasons, not just because they didn’t meet their predicted grades.

Some students exceed expectations and decide to explore other options. Others change their minds about their original course or university, or apply late after the main UCAS deadline.

Clearing is simply a flexible route into university, open to anyone who doesn’t currently hold an offer, regardless of their academic performance.

You'll only get into bad universities

This couldn’t be further from the truth! Many well-respected universities offer places through Clearing every year.

Universities use Clearing to fill remaining spaces on high-quality courses, not because the courses are subpar, but because student numbers can be unpredictable.

It’s a great opportunity to join a reputable institution that’s the right fit for you, both academically and personally.

You'll be too late to get student accommodation

Many students worry that applying through Clearing means missing out on university accommodation – but that’s simply not the case.

In fact, at the University of Chichester, we guarantee accommodation for all Clearing applicants, so you can focus on finding the right course without stressing about where you’ll live.

How do I know if I’m in Clearing?

If you’re in Clearing, it will be clearly indicated on your UCAS Hub account.

You’ll also be given a Clearing number, which you’ll need when speaking to universities.

You’ll be in Clearing if:

  • You didn’t receive any offers.
  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your firm or insurance choices.
  • You applied after 30 June.

If you do have a place but want to explore other options, you can choose to self-release into Clearing.

How do I self-release into Clearing?

To self-release into Clearing, you’ll need to:

  1. Log in to your UCAS Hub
  2. Next to the course you wish to be released from, click ‘Decline My Place’
  3. Confirm your decision
  4. Get your Clearing number.

Clearing checklist

So, now you know who’s eligible, let’s talk about what you’ll need to have with you when contacting universities through Clearing:

  • Your UCAS ID

This is the 10-digit number you received when you registered with UCAS.

  • Your Clearing number

You’ll find this in your UCAS hub if you’re eligible for Clearing.

  • Your exam results

Have your grades ready, including A-Levels, GCSEs and any other relevant qualifications.

  • Details about the course you’re interested in

Be aware of the course name and UCAS code so you can ask specific questions.

  • A pen and paper (or a notes app)

You’ll want to jot down important information, such as contact names, course offers, and next steps.
