Andy’s Clearing Story
When Andy first imagined his path to university, he didn’t expect it to involve Clearing.
Like many students, Andy had a plan—or at least thought he did—but life doesn’t always go according to schedule.
In this blog, BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Integrated Foundation Year student, Andy, shares what motivated his decision to apply to the University of Chichester through Clearing and offers advice to anyone considering a similar route to higher education.
My journey to Clearing
Before starting University, IÂ wasn’t the most organised when it came to my applications.
I received offers from a few places, but I missed the deadline to confirm my spot, mostly due to forgetfulness and poor planning.
Clearing wasn’t something I had planned to use, but I saw it as a kind of last-chance opportunity to secure a place at university before it was too late.
Once I’d decided to apply through Clearing, I felt relieved, knowing that I could still start my course in the year I had initially planned.
Doing the research
To figure out my options, I turned to brochures and undergraduate prospectuses.
Location played a big role in my decision. I wanted to stay relatively close to home, and the University of Chichester stood out as a good option.
Its Bognor Regis campus is just a 15-minute walk from my house, and the Chichester campus is also super easy to commute to, allowing me to save money on travel costs and accommodation.
More importantly, I knew the University’s Tech Park was well-equipped with the tools and machinery I needed for my course, so it felt like the perfect match.
Making the call
While other universities were possibilities, I was mostly focused on securing a place at Chichester right from the get-go.
When I called on Results Day, the admissions team were so helpful. They answered all my questions and even arranged for me to visit the next day to meet my course lecturers.
The process was smooth, and they were quick to help me get settled.
Securing my place
Once I secured my place at Chichester, I felt a mix of relief and excitement.
I’d had my doubts that I’d be able to apply at all once I realised I’d missed the initial application deadline, so being able to apply through Clearing meant I could start my degree sooner than I’d thought.
Looking back: Any regrets?
Not really, if I had to do one thing differently, it would probably be to spend more time researching what Clearing is so that I could feel more prepared on the day.
First-year highlights
My first year at Chichester has been full of memorable moments. Some of my top highlights include taking part in building battle bots and constructing miniature towers out of metal using welding techniques.
Both involved teamwork with other bright and kind students who have been incredible to work alongside and get to know throughout the past year.
My advice for future students
If you’re feeling apprehensive about calling universities, maybe because you think you might be judged or that the process will be long and complicated, I can assure you that, that definitely won’t be the case.
Universities are keen to welcome new students and won’t hold your poor timing against you. The staff are there to help guide you through the process and will be patient with you.
I had these same concerns when I entered Clearing, but soon after, I realised that there really was nothing to worry about.
By sharing my story, I’m hoping to shed some light on the process for anyone who may be feeling nervous about Clearing. Just take your time, read the forms carefully and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Final thoughts
Clearing might not have been part of my original plan, but it turned out to be the best path for me.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t panic.
Take a deep breath, do your research and make the call.
You might just find the perfect fit, just like I did.
