Former Vice-Chancellor receives OBE in honours list

THE former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chichester has been recognised by the Queen for his service to higher education and economic regeneration.

Professor Clive Behagg was awarded an OBE in the New Year honours list. The former Vice-Chancellor, who retired in 2017, joined the institution in 1976 and was an integral part of its progression from the merger between Bishop Otter and Bognor Regis teacher training colleges in 1977 to achieving University status in 2005.

The Queen’s honours list recognises the achievements of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom each year. Professor Behagg was honoured for his 42-year service to higher education and economic regeneration which notably includes the development of the University’s multimillion-pound Engineering and Digital Technology Park.

Speaking of the development, which opens in September, Professor Behagg OBE said: “It will make our region a place where businesses, large and small, can thrive, create jobs for the town, and where people can access the very best education and training opportunities. Students will graduate with strong sector-focussed employability skills and industry experience and will generate an estimated £5million per annum into the economy.”

Throughout his 42 years of service Professor Behagg OBE held a Personal Chair in History at the University and, among other works, authored Politics and Production in the Early Nineteenth Century (Routledge 1999) and Labour and Reform 1815-1914 (Hodder 2000).
