What to Say to Someone Starting University: A Guide for Parents and Carers

In the next few weeks, thousands of parents and carers across the country will prepare to send a young person off to university.

Whether it’s your first time or you’ve done this before, the moment they pack up and head off to start their new chapter can feel overwhelming for everyone.

What do you say to them in those final days before they go? How do you strike a balance between being supportive and letting go?

In this blog, we’ve compiled a list of practical things you can do and say to help your child feel confident, loved, and ready to embark on this new adventure.

What to say

“Let’s make a checklist together”

This opens the door to a practical planning session, showing you’re eager to be involved, without wanting to take over. Help them think through essential documents, kitchen supplies, bedding, and other necessities.

“You’re going to learn so much – outside the classroom too”

Remind them that university is about more than academics. It’s a chance to grow socially, emotionally and independently.

“If you ever feel overwhelmed, just call or text me”

Offer emotional support without hovering. Knowing you’re always available can be a huge comfort.

“You don’t need to have all the answers right now”

Ease the pressure. Many students worry about choosing the right course, making friends, and feeling at home straight away. Reassure them that it’s okay if it takes time to tick off everything on their freshers’ bucket list!

“I trust you”

These three words can be incredibly empowering. They reinforce your belief in their ability to tackle challenges and make good decisions.

What to do

Help with packing – but let them lead.

Offer guidance on what to bring, but encourage them to make decisions.

If they’re unsure about what to pack and what to leave behind, gently guide them towards our handy checklist—it’s designed to take the guesswork out of packing and help them feel more prepared for the move!

Create a simple budget together.

Talk through managing money – rent, food, social life and unexpected costs. A spreadsheet or a budgeting app can be a great tool.

Set up a few life admin tasks.

Make sure they know how to:

  • Register with a GP near campus
  • Understand their student loan and tuition payments.
  • Cook a few basic meals.

Plan a visit – but don’t overcommit.

Let them know you’d love to visit once they’re settled, but give them space to adjust first. A visit in the first term can be something nice for both of you to look forward to.

Helping a young person prepare for university isn’t just about packing boxes—it’s about preparing them emotionally, practically, and mentally for one of the biggest transitions of their life.

You’ve done the hard work of raising them. Now, you get to watch them fly!
