Developmental Project serves as the core intellectual research activity pursued by the candidate and, as such, serves as the dissertation module. Each artist and theatre collective will identify and articulate a longer-term agenda through the expression of critical theoretical positions, aesthetic concerns, and cultural agenda of their artistic practice. Through practical presentations the candidate examines the processes of creative practice leading to a practical dissertation with the aims and objectives of this inquiry articulated in a research report. These two elements of the practical dissertation then inform and provide further research direction for the written dissertation. The module intersects critically with other modules throughout the duration of generating, defining and refining researched ideas culminating in the individual/collective praxis.
Developmental Project identifies what the collective or individual artist does and, through practice-led exploration in the studio, identifies how they do it. While the Production module offers a significant and immediate indication of the ideas of the collective/artist, Developmental Project engages course members with an independently driven research processes in both practice and reflexive engagement on critical/cultural development to inform a critically engaged written dissertation Developmental Project allows space for longer-term thinking and, as such, reflects the business plan expected as part of the Professional Portfolio module. It could be argued that the long term critical and creative agenda from this module is as crucial to the group’s survival as a business plan.
