Movement Studies

The first part of the module will introduce you to Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), an established model of dance in education that highlights principles of Body, Shape, Space and Effort. Practical movement exploration will allow you to learn about movement in anatomical, spatial and qualitative terms, as well as provide a practical framework for analysing, describing and teaching dance.

The second part of the module will enable you to explore different dance styles (such as Jazz; Ballet; Street Dance; Bharatanatyam; Contemporary; Folk Dance) using LMA to understand, analyse and teach genre-specific content. It will enable both practical and theoretical exploration of dance education and teaching practice through an LMA lens.

The module will be comprised of practical sessions informed by Rudolph Laban’s movement theory, to provide theoretical insight to provide context and knowledge. Principles of Laban Movement Analysis will develop understanding of the concepts of Body, Shape, Space and Effort in theory and practice. This will be applied to the exploration and teaching of different genres and styles of dance in building your key pedagogic knowledge.
