Alzheimer’s research examined in free lecture

Join Professor Nat Milton at his inaugural lecture at the University of Chichester on 27 November, as he discusses the discoveries that have shaped Alzheimer’s disease research and the new possibilities for treatment.

The event, titled Amyloid-ß: The Poison in Your Human Machine, marks his promotion to Professor of Biomedical Science and will explore his pioneering research into amyloid-ß, a key player in Alzheimer’s disease.

Nat has spent nearly three decades studying amyloid proteins, linking his research to commercial and health applications.

Reflecting on his career, he said: “As a scientist who has studied amyloid proteins for almost 30 years, it has been an exciting rollercoaster, with the ability to link the biomedical research to both commercial and health areas a bonus. I look forward to the challenges of my Professorship ahead and of course the next discovery.”

His lecture will highlight his discoveries in Alzheimer’s research, including the identification of a highly toxic phosphorylated form of amyloid-ß, the discovery of kissorphin—a neuropeptide that blocks amyloid-ß toxicity—and evidence that the body’s endocannabinoids offer neuroprotective effects. These findings suggest that the human body has built-in defences against amyloid-ß toxicity, opening new possibilities for treatment.

Nat Milton joined the University of Chichester in 2024 to help establish the Community Diagnostics Centre and develop new Biomedical Science courses. He holds a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in Neuroendocrinology from the University of London, where he was the first Marjorie A Robinson Fellow funded by the Society for Endocrinology. His career includes experience in NHS Clinical Biochemistry departments and academic roles across London and Leeds, building a reputation in Alzheimer’s drug discovery and diagnostics research.

The lecture will be held on 27 November from 6-7.30pm at The ShowRoom on the Bishop Otter campus. Guests are invited to enjoy complimentary refreshments from before the lecture begins. Entry is free, and to reserve your space, go to eventbrite.
