Nursing skills bootcamp looks at careers in the caring professions

Careers in the caring professions were in the spotlight during a recent visit to the University of Chichester by students of the Skills Bootcamp in Nursing from Chichester College. The government-funded scheme, which also has the support of West Sussex County Council, was developed by Chichester College collaborating with the University of Chichester and the RCN King’s Nursing cadets. It is aimed at people considering a career in healthcare or looking to make a career change.
Skills Bootcamps are free government-funded training programmes available to eligible adults over 19. The Nursing Skills Bootcamp is an intensive 12-week programme designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills needed to work in various healthcare settings. Whether just starting out or looking to return to the workforce, the bootcamp offers a practical pathway into the world of nursing.
As part of their course, students were invited to spend two days at the University. They experienced clinical teaching from staff and from one of the University’s BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing graduates, who explained why he had chosen a career in the caring profession.
Dr Nita Muir, Head of the School of Nursing and Allied Health said: “We are delighted to support individuals from all walks of life who aspire to join the Nursing profession. The focus over the last few days has been on patient safety across different care settings. Learners received exceptional teaching, accessed our modern, state-of-the-art facilities and heard from our graduates who are now thriving in diverse health care roles. We look forward to welcoming aspiring nurses on our courses in the future.”
One of the attendees explained: “I signed up for the Nursing Skills Bootcamp because I was looking for a complete career change from my work in Finance. It’s been great hearing from people in the profession about why they choose nursing as a career and how rewarding it can be. It’s shown me that a career in nursing is what I really want to pursue.”
