Entry Requirements and Fees

Entry requirements:

  • Typically, candidates will have an honours degree with a classification of 2.2 or above.
  • At least fifty per cent of the degree content will have been in English.
  • All candidates must have achieved at least a ‘C’ / 4 in GCSE English and Mathematics.  
  • All applicants will be required to demonstrate awareness of professional requirements within schools and an awareness of the education sector.
  • GCSE Equivalency: We would normally expect applicants to have taken and passed the full GCSE course however in some circumstances we do accept equivalent qualifications or equivalency tests. If you are unable to enrol for the full GCSE course, please contact Admissions to discuss which equivalent qualifications we may accept.
  • We are offering a £1000 bursary for alumni students continuing their studies with a PGCE.

The teaching and learning approach for this course has been exemplary. Every subject day has been a master class in facilitating learning and I truly appreciate the work and effort that the tutor has put into planning these days.
As mentioned, the planning behind subject study days is outstanding and true preparation for school experience. I love that there is an honest dialogue in University about everything that this year has encompassed, from school experience to government strategies and frameworks. Tied into this is the tutor’s overwhelming support and guidance which allowed us to explore the world of education and teaching and our place within it.

Course overview

The PGCE in Secondary English will allow you to become a qualified teacher in just one year. If you have a passion for English language and literature and wish to teach at secondary school or college level (ages 11 to 19), then this route is an ideal option.

Course structure

During the course, you’ll split your time between placements in schools and university-based training including Subject Study and Professional Studies modules:

  • Subject Study – you’ll develop your knowledge of the secondary school curriculum. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to deliver creative lesson plans to achieve the best progress for the children you teach.
  • Professional Studies – explore modules that will develop skills as an effective teacher including behaviour management, child protection, applying for teaching positions and more.
  • School placements – we know the best place to build your confidence and expertise as a teacher is in the classroom. That’s why the majority of your time will be spent in schools. You’ll complete two main teaching placements in contrasting schools as well as completing short placements in other educational contexts. Scroll down to 'School placements' to find out more.

  • Qualify as a teacher in one year - this course includes Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), allowing you to teach in any state funded school in the UK and beyond

Teaching

The programme’s delivered full-time over 38 weeks with 70% practical school experience in established partner schools and 30% university-based time, divided between Professional Studies and Subject Study.

This experience provides you with the opportunity to work alongside serving teachers, learning about the broader roles and skills of teachers and other school staff.

Assessment

The course is assessed through observation during teaching placements and written assignments.

To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students need to complete three 4,000-word assignments at FHEQ level 7 (Masters) and two blocks of School Experience.

PGCE applicants are required to have an enhanced Disclosure Barring Service check which needs to be paid for before the start of the course.

Costs incurred during School Experience

Over the duration of your course you will spend 24 weeks on placement. These school experiences are organised in our partnership schools which extend across East & West Sussex, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and into Surrey. Travel to placements, which can be by car or public transport, varies but your commute will not usually exceed 1 hour from your term time address to the placement school (assuming your term time address is within our partnership area). 

Students not in receipt of a government bursary may receive a contribution towards travel costs depending upon the distance.

Whilst on School Experience appropriate professional dress will be required.

Students may wish to purchase a laptop/tablet to use whilst on school experience as schools are not required to provide these.

School placements

Our Schools Partnership network

We work with hundreds of partnership schools and organisations covering a wide area including: West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, East Sussex and the Surrey border. These partners are based in rural and urban settings and cover a varied range of school types. 

How the placements work

Around 70% of the course is spent in school, with your time divided mainly between two contrasting placements. You'll also complete a week's training in a primary school (Key Stage 2). Gaining experience in a mix of settings will help you to develop skills required to confidently start a career in teaching.

Great care is taken to place you in schools that will support you and prepare you thoroughly for a career in teaching. 

Support during your placements

School experience is invaluable to trainee teachers. That's why we take steps to ensure you are well supported. We provide mentor training in our partnerships schools so you can learn from and build relationships with serving teachers. You'll also have the full support of the teaching staff at the University while you're out on placement.
