After graduating I got a job as an assistant producer in television before moving on to work for Sky Sports in graphics. I worked on live Premier League football, Rugby Union, US & European golf, tennis, NFL, cricket and much more. I am now the main graphics designer and operator for Chelsea Football Club TV & online.

The University of Chichester gave me so much insight into what the industry is like and helped me realize what made me stand out as a candidate. The lecturers were all so enthusiastic, constantly there for advice and always willing to go out of their way for students. I developed a whole range of skills at university that proved important in gaining my first media job.

Course content

The aim of the course is to give students a real insight into the world of sports media. 

Students study the history of media coverage of sport, reflect on the cultural and social significance of sport, explore interdependent relationships between sport and the media, and examine sports communication in the digital landscape. 

A significant focus is invested in hands-on experience of working in sports media production.  

You're part of a vibrant community of people interested in sport and the media and together we will work on building your skill sets in particular specialisms be that reporting, producing, camera operations, directing, editing, presenting, marketing or working with social media for instance. 

You will develop as researchers, analysts and communicators and acquire important skills in storytelling.  Regular coverage of university sport will emulate professional practice and afford students opportunities to develop skills highly valued by graduate employers. 

Running their own TV show that shapes sport content will arm our students with an understanding of production, post-production and studio production. 

In their final year students will engage in a range of independent and group projects and experience working with client-led sports media productions and commissions. 

Such enterprises will equip students with necessary skills regarding self-promotion, networking, career portfolio management and ways to showcase talent.

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At the Bishop Otter campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support.  We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas.  We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.

The Learning Resource is the hub of the learning environment.  It has two upper floors of library resources, one for silent study and one for quiet study, both of which have recently been refurbished. On the ground floor, you’ll find the Support and Information Zone, Media Centre, Otter Gallery, Costa Coffee and a variety of IT resources.

The Bishop Otter LRC also offers:

In addition, the Media Department has a dedicated Green Screen facility and studio for student use as and when projects require it. Within the Creative Hub you will find two Mac Suites for all your creative needs with highly trained support staff ready to answer any of your questions.

Our seven Edit Suites are of professional specifications with high level of soundproofing and hardware, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the post-production of drama, documentary and performance projects. Students will receive training on a wide range of industry standard creative software packages such as:

Where this can take you

The Sports Media degree is a course of study that offers a very strong prospect of graduate employment. The sports media job market is a robust one. Opportunities exist within graduate programmes, trainee schemes and apprenticeships presented by key broadcasters in the sports media-scape across a range of positions. Some students might wish to take post-graduate journalism qualifications and gravitate towards reporting and presenting. Most sports organisations have media officers now and for those interested in careers in marketing, branding, sponsorship or advertising, the sport sector attracts more revenue than any other.

Work placements

A work placement module in the second year offers students opportunities with relevant media-sport partners.

This experience should enable students to identify links between knowledge gained from their degree and the practices of sports media industries.  

Tutors will forge connections with other Sports Media modules and experiences to emphasize ways employability is embedded in the programme.

Specific approaches students might take as they develop and fashion career paths for themselves are also promoted.

Teaching and assessment

The student experience is central to our teaching philosophy. 

Students are taught by staff with expertise in media, film and creative and digital technologies and staff from the Institute of Sport. 

This rich, stimulating learning environment will generate relevant knowledge to help students find their place in diverse media-sport professions. 

Students will also learn from visiting sports journalists, professionals in television sport and radio, digital media specialists, sports marketers and advertising creatives.
