About
Ian is the programme coordinator for the university’s unique Sports Media degree – an exciting course that delivers practical hands-on experience and provides opportunities for students to learn from industry professionals alongside experts at the university.
In the Sports Media programme Ian works with students on modules that focus on news culture and sports journalism; sport and television; new media and sport; sport and film; commissioned projects and work placements. He also supervises dissertations with Sports Media students in their final year.
Ian has been at the university since 1994. He has worked in Creative & Digital Technologies and also taught a diverse range of courses, from creative writing to theatre and sport for example, in other departments.
Ian is an award winning teacher. Before he designed the Sports Media degree he was a Principal Lecturer in Learning and Teaching at Chichester with a responsibility for supporting staff to achieve high standards of teaching, collaborating with specific subject leaders and colleagues on various projects, and engaging in action research to enhance the student experience.
Ian has given presentations on a number of topics at international conferences.
He is an active sports journalist with contacts in the industry including BBC sports commentators, correspondents, social media officers and key figures in television graphics, marketing and communications, media operations and event management that regularly visit the university to share their world with students in the series of Sports Media Industry Talks.
Ian’s research interests include sport and the media, advertising, Hollywood and British cinema, narratology, journalism, gender studies and cultural and critical theory.
