Big Tech and regulating emerging technology: University of Chichester hosts conversation with Lord Tyrie

The University of Chichester will host a conversation with Lord Andrew Tyrie, former Chairman of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), to hear his perspectives on how Big Tech has impacted our lives as consumers.

Lord Tyrie, who is also a former MP for Chichester, will share his knowledge, insights and experiences regarding the rise of Big Tech as a fixture of our economic lives. The term ‘Big Tech’ refers to influential technology firms – particularly the ‘big five’; Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft.

He will also discuss the approach taken by the CMA in addressing these concerns through The Digital Markets, Consumers and Competition Act 2024 (DMCCA), and consideration of the broader geo-political landscape to give a sense of our options for the future.

Keith Sinclair, Lecturer in Law at the University of Chichester, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Lord Tyrie to the University for what promises to be a timely discussion on the legal and policy responses to the rise of digital markets and Big Tech in the UK.

“This fireside conversation offers a rare chance to hear Lord Tyrie draw on his experience as former Chair of the Competition and Markets Authority, exploring how competition policy intersects with consumer rights, regulation and the broader geopolitical landscape. It is an invaluable opportunity for students, staff and the wider community to engage directly with one of the most influential voices in modern UK competition law and policy.”

The talk takes place on Thursday, May 21 from 6pm to 7.30pm. You can register for an in-person or online ticket on Eventbrite.
