Hats off to graduating students as University honours career diplomat

A high-profile career diplomat, who was awarded an OBE in recognition of his work during the Arab Spring, was among those celebrating this week at the University of Chichester’s winter graduation ceremonies. The University recognised Tony Kay OBE as an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration in the impressive surroundings of Chichester Cathedral.

Graduating in subjects as varied as Education, Social Work, Law and Engineering, this year’s graduating class included undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students from across the UK and beyond. Also recognised were those from one of the University’s partner colleges, Thinkspace Education.

Mr Kay, who is currently Deputy Ambassador to Brazil, has close links with the University of Chichester. As a visiting professor he has delivered a series of lectures and workshops on careers in the diplomatic service.

Sharing his advice for students, Tony said: “Education is the key to all of us having meaning and purpose in our lives. I’ve been doing this for the past 30 years because I have a real passion for public service. To be recognised by a fantastic uni like Chichester is pretty special. My advice would be to be kind, step out of your comfort zone to do new things, see the world and have fun!”

Among those graduating with a first-class Master’s degree in International Business was Helen Quiroga. Helen worked in the university’s International Office alongside her degree, organising international events and supporting summer school activities. Helen said: “Writing my dissertation during my busiest time at work was a challenge, but it was definitely worth it. My Master’s has given me new skills which I can use in my career.”

Professor Symeon Dagkas, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chichester said: “It is fantastic to celebrate our students’ hard work and determination as they graduate this week in the wonderful setting of Chichester Cathedral. I would also like to thank our Honorary Graduate, Tony Kay, for sharing his inspiring stories from his distinguished career as a diplomat with our students. His insight and passion for public service are a inspiration to us all.”
