Bognor Regis creative and digital hub may provide students with jobs

PLANS for a creative and digital hub in Bognor Regis which could provide students with work placements and jobs have taken a step forward after community groups and businesses backed the draft proposals.

The new hub, next to the town’s train station, would support the growth of the creative sectors in the town by providing a shared workspace where small businesses could work in a creative environment and offer employment opportunities for students and graduates.

The project is being kick-started by West Sussex County Council, Arun District Council, and the University of Chichester, and is closely linked to the development of its new Engineering and Digital Technology Park.

It is hoped a new cluster workspace would provide an environment for University graduates to develop new businesses and, in turn, ensure the former students remain in Bognor Regis and West Sussex.

Space at Bognor Regis railway station has been identified as a possible location for a hub, where a meeting was held earlier this week to seek the views of community groups and businesses.

Those attending included renowned designer and West Sussex resident Wayne Hemingway, who is leading the work to develop an overall design brief for the project.

He said: “All towns have creative people within their community, and the enormous contribution of creative businesses to the economy and to quality of life is now empirically proved and accepted.

“However, Bognor Regis is lacking in a focal point for its creative community that will undoubtedly enlarge as the University opens its new facilities in the coming years. Hopefully we have made the first baby steps to remedying this situation.”

Also attending the event was West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith.

She said: “The aim of this particular project is to create higher value jobs in Bognor Regis, bring more young people into the town and generate an environment where creative and digital start-ups can grow and thrive.

“The new hub would be a focal point that would attract interest and additional visitors to the town. It’s obviously very early days, but this an exciting project that could help contribute to the wider regeneration of Bognor Regis.”
