Chichester students’ union named best bar none

Students’ Union bars at the University of Chichester have been named as the best in the country for their work in promoting safe drinking and student wellbeing.

The Zee Bars, situated at the institution’s Chichester and Bognor Regis campuses, outshone more than 50 other UK establishments to top the national Best Bar None awards.

Judges from the scheme, which is run by the National Union of Students, gave a score of 100 per cent following an anonymous visit, and said: “We always enjoy visits to Zee Bar.

“Everything we saw looked to be in working order and very well maintained – the venue was clean and appealing, and having posters regarding important safe drinking information.

“With all the posters around, the large number of staff and how friendly they all were, the welfare of customers was clearly a high priority, if not the highest.”

The Best Bar None awards promote and reward the huge efforts that students’ union bar put in to corporate social responsibility as well as the wider effects of selling alcohol.

John Williams, from the University of Chichester Students’ Union, said: “It is great to receive recognition as the best in the country for looking after our students.

“We want them to have fun, but we take our responsibilities very seriously, and this award proves to we have given our all throughout the last year in ensuring their safety.”

The awards, now in their twelfth year, have seen more than 100 hundred students’ union outlets recognised for their exceptional work in promoting safe alcohol retailing and student safety within the late night industry.

Mr Williams added: “We have always considered the welfare of our students.

“At a time when negative perceptions of the licensed trade prevail, particularly with regards to student drinking, the Best Bar None award is a positive leap in improving the standards, and indeed the perceptions, of alcohol retailing.”
