How can I help to prepare my student for Clearing?

Prior research and preparation will help to make the Clearing process easier. It’s useful to look up and note down any universities that have any Clearing courses of interest.

With these courses, you can help your student to make the right choice for them.

Preparing for the Clearing call is also important. Having everything you need with you, and any questions will take a lot of stress and worry out of the call.

Ensure that you have:

  • Your UCAS ID and Clearing number
  • Grades/Qualifications, with UCAS points if applicable
  • Pen and paper or a phone to make notes
  • Their personal statement

As a parent or guardian, your main job is to encourage, keep calm, and reassure your student. Try to help guide them through the process as it can often be an intimidating and stressful period. This can help make the situation much more manageable and can really help students make the right decisions for their future.

Top tips for results day

  • Try to do a little bit of research about the important times and dates as to not ask your student lots of questions, and save you both some unnecessary stress.
  • Exam results day is normally stressful. If they don’t get the results they were expecting, try not to add to their disappointment with your own. Stay calm, reassuring, and comforting.
  • If your student hasn’t got the grades they needed, they may be worried about what the future holds. Try to reassure them this isn’t a problem and to make the best of the situation.
  • If they don’t get the results they need, the obvious option is to enter Clearing. But, do keep other options in mind. Having a gap year for some work experience, travelling, or both, looks good on a personal statement.
  • Retaking exams to try and push their grades up is also a possibility. However, some universities ask for higher grades from students who retake exams.
