Freshers’ Guide to Uni 2025

Welcome to uni!
Whether you’re commuting from home, crossing counties or flying in from overseas, starting university is a huge milestone.
It’s exciting, a little scary and full of opportunities to experience new things.
This guide is here to help you settle in, make the most of your first year and dodge some of the most common freshers’ pitfalls.
Week one: Starting strong
Unpack early
Don’t end up living out of boxes for the first six months! Making your space feel like home from day one can ease homesickness and help give you a sense of control.
Meet your flatmates
Feeling shy? That’s normal. Start with a simple ‘hi!’ and suggest a group outing – coffee, dinner or something fun like Bowling – you’ll be glad you made the first move!
Explore campus
Find your lecture halls, the library, the students’ union and the best coffee spots before classes begin. It’ll save you a lot of stress later – trust us!
Getting started: Set yourself up for success
Attend induction eventsÂ
These sessions give you a chance to meet your coursemates and get a glimpse into what you’ll be studying this year, which can help to ease any anxiety you may have been feeling about the start of term.
Get organised earlyÂ
Use a planner or app to track upcoming deadlines, lectures and seminars. Staying on top of things now means less panic later.
Ask questions
No question is too big or small. Your lecturers, tutors and support staff are there to help – so don’t be afraid to speak up.
Finding your crowd
Join clubs and societies
From rugby to cheerleading and even a Swiftie society, there are so many groups to choose from here at the University of Chichester. Pick something that excites you and find like-minded people who share a similar passion or interest.
Say yes
Go to events, try new things and be open to spontaneous plans. You never know what might lead to a lifelong friendship!
Be yourself
Uni is a fresh start. Embrace what makes you, you – that’s how you’ll find your people.
Budgeting basics
Track your spendingÂ
Budgeting apps are your best friend – especially when the ‘say yes to everything’ phase catches up with your bank balance.
Cook at home
Learn how to make a few simple meals – it’s cheaper, healthier and a great way to bond with your flatmates.
Use student discountsÂ
UNiDAYS and StudentBeans offer great deals on food, entertainment and more. Don’t miss out!
Mental health & wellbeing
Take breaksÂ
Uni can be intense, especially after a long break from studying. Make time for rest, hobbies and socialising.
Use support servicesÂ
At the University of Chichester, we offer a range of professional services to support your health and wellbeing. Don’t hesitate to reach out at any point throughout the year.
Stay connectedÂ
Call home, talk to friends and avoid isolating yourself. Remember, everyone in your year is likely feeling the same mix of emotions!
Top tips for freshers
You don’t need to have it all figured out
Uni is a journey. You will grow, change and learn so much – don’t pressure yourself to have all the answers in week one.
Be kind – to yourself and othersÂ
Everyone is adjusting, so remember – a little empathy goes a long way.
Enjoy it!Â
Make memories, take allllll the photos and embrace the chaos!
Good luck! You’ve got this. And remember – every fresher feels a bit lost at first. You’re not alone!
