How to Apply Through Clearing
Clearing is how unis and colleges fill spaces on their courses that aren’t full.
You can use Clearing if:
- You haven’t received any offers (or none that you wanted to accept)
- You didn’t meet the criteria of your offers
- You’ve declined your firm place using the ‘decline my place’ button in your application

When does Clearing start and end?
Clearing is open from the 5th of July to the 21st of October 2024.
Make sure to put these dates in your calendar!
_________
Before Clearing Opens:
- Read the course modules, learn about the University and have a look at the accommodation. Knowing this will help you answer additional Clearing questions during your phone call.
- Writing notes. Have a pen and paper handy to jot down information. You may be asked to phone back, or you may write down points you can say during the call before you ring.
- Practising a clearing phone call with a friend or relative. This will help to answer some of the questions you may be asked.
Examples of questions asked by universities:
- What course are you interested in?
- Why do you want to study this course?
- Why do you want to study at this university?
- Do you have relevant experience or knowledge related to the degree?

During Clearing:
Once Clearing has opened and you have your results and know your course of interest, it’s time to apply.
You can approach as many universities as you wish during Clearing, however you can only apply for one university and one course at a time
It’s advised to complete one application at a time, as to not feel overwhelmed.
Starting in 2025 instead of 2024
- Taking a year out is considered a ‘deferred entry’ for some courses during Clearing.
- If this option is available for your chosen course, we’ll let you know when you contact us.
Accepting an offer through UCAS
- If you applied to university through UCAS, you can accept a Clearing offer in your UCAS Hub.
- Go to the ‘Your choices’ section of your application and click the ‘Add Clearing’ choice. Then enter the details of the course. Remember:
