Professor Seamus Higson awarded significant accolade for outstanding contribution to science
THE University of Chichester is delighted to announce that Professor Séamus Higson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability and Enterprise), has been recognised for his significant accomplishments in scientific research.
Professor Higson has been presented with a prestigious and rarely-awarded Doctor of Science, (DSc), by Cranfield University. The major honour, which is a higher degree given to scientists or engineers, is in recognition for a seminal and sustained contribution to research that has given rise to a notable step change in the field.

Chichester’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor was honoured for his science that is focused towards the development of sensor and biosensor technologies for transformational application within medicine, veterinary science, water quality management, environmental monitoring, and homeland security.
Professor Higson said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have received this award as it reflects a lifetime of research, from the bench through to full impact, the development of new scientific research methods, clinical practice, and new product development. One of the most satisfying elements is to see how my work has given rise to new research methods that others in the field of science are actively using.
“It is also helping improve the quality of life and alleviate suffering through medicine and healthcare applications. My hope is that this award will help establish our new areas of science and engineering research within the University of Chichester’s Tech Park and, indeed, help our 2021 REF submission.”
A scientist and manufacturing-based engineer by profession, but educationalist by passion, Professor Higson is among a select group who has crossed the boundaries of chemistry, medicine, and engineering. Having led the Biotechnology Centre at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire, which now boasts a global reputation for bio-scientific research, Professor Higson is responsible for the development of Chichester’s new Engineering and Digital Technology Park, opening in September.
The prestigious DSc was presented to Professor Higson at Cranfield, above, where he completed his most significant work during his 13 years at the University. He is the only recipient of the award at Cranfield’s graduation and just the fourth to receive the accolade in the last five years.
