Student Finance and Clearing
Clearing is how unis and colleges fill spaces on their courses that aren’t full.
You can use Clearing if:
- You haven’t received any offers (or none that you wanted to accept)
- You didn’t meet the criteria of your offers
- You’ve declined your firm place using the ‘decline my place’ button in your application

Clearing and student finance
If you are choosing to fund your university studies with a UK student loan, ensure your loan application fits your Clearing choice.
_________
Applying for student loans
A UK student loan covers your tuition fees and helps with your living costs via a means tested maintenance loan. This is provided by the UK Government and you’ll need to apply for them before the start of your course.
_________
Changing student finance after Clearing
If you’ve already applied for student finance and then changed your course or university through Clearing, this will need to be updated in your student finance application.
This process is different from updating your UCAS application. Here’s a quick guide to the process:
If you’re from England and studying full-time, you’ll need to do the following:
Start by signing in to your online account (on the government website)
- Click ‘Undergraduate student finance applications’
- Select which application needs changing
- Under the heading ‘Manage your student finance’, click ‘View and manage your applications’
- Click ‘Change your application’ and then click again
- Click ‘University/college and course’
- Click ‘Submit’ once you’ve entered and confirmed your changes
If you are anywhere outside of England will need to update your details using your local government site:
Haven’t applied for student finance?
If you’ve not applied for a UK student loan yet, do it ASAP – you don’t need to wait for your results to apply.
All you need to enter in your application is your first choice of university.
A student finance application can take at least 6 weeks to process, so you might not receive your money in time for the start of your course if your student loan application is submitted after Clearing.
However, Student Finance England tries to give you some of your loan as close to the start of your course as possible.
