University to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday 27 January

The University of Chichester’s Department of History and Politics in collaboration with residents and New Park Cinema are commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day, 2017.

The annual services mark the day the Auschwitz concentration camps were liberated in 1945. Two historically-significant films are be screened at New Park Cinema in Chichester and discussions and information given to support them, including two expert panels with members of the film community, the historical profession and the University.

The Department of History and Politics are honoured to again participate in this important event and have secured 20 student places for those wishing to attend. To gain a free place the first 20 students to give their names to SIZ will be allocated.

The event begins with the screening of Conspiracy – with Sir Kenneth Branagh – and is followed by Conspiracy of Goodness, an original documentary by Martyn Cox. These will start at 4pm at New Park Cinema and the evening will conclude at 8pm.

The event will also feature historian Peter Gorse, author of the study, A Good Place to Hide. Peter is a leading public historian of the French resistance to Nazism and his research has specialized in the rescue of potential victims of the Holocaust.

Professor Hugo Frey, author of a study of the Holocaust film director Louis Malle, said: “Cinema has proven a powerful image to restore images the Third Reich denied, as well as to give voice to the heroism of resistance and survivor testimony. The films screened this year capture both these aspects with powerful effect. We are privileged to also welcome and present the work of Peter Gorse, who is at the forefront of understanding contemporary history.”

The Department of History and Politics are again participating in the commemoration of the Holocaust Memorial Day having previously organised a memorial service for Sir Nicholas Winton, who rescued Jewish children from Nazi rule.
