University Mental Health Week 2023: Anxiety

Mental health awareness week

The theme for this year’s University Mental Health Week is anxiety. Here are some tips from our Mental Health Ambassadors about how to deal with university workload and career anxiety.

Workload

Workload at university can become a source of anxiety when it becomes a constant worry. It can make you feel overwhelmed and sometimes this can lead you to procrastinate and avoid the tasks altogether. However, there are ways to help yourself feel less anxious and overcome the workload at your own pace.

Firstly, due dates are not there to scare you. Instead, you can use due dates as a tool to help with time management and break up your workload into smaller parts. Breaking up your work into smaller sections and slowly completing them over time, can decrease feelings of being overwhelmed and instead make you feel in control over your work.

Secondly, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Simply talking to your lecturers, discussing on forums, and taking part in class discussions can make your tasks seem more approachable. If you have unanswered questions or difficulty understanding the assignment, the work will seem much harder than it actually is. Getting your doubts cleared is one way to help you feel less anxious.

Thirdly, don’t compare. Everybody has a different pace they work at. This can be because of a range of reasons, such as balancing work, university, social events, hobbies and more. This means that it is not easy to judge if you are ‘falling behind’ in an assignment, just by comparing yourself to others. Instead, it may be better to focus on how you can work around your own timetable. Doing this might help you figure out your own pace and create a routine that you feel comfortable following.

Careers

Thinking about the future can be an anxious topic, especially when it comes to careers. Some students feel anxious because they don’t know what they want to do in the future. However, there are ways to help you feel more prepared. The university offers bookings with the career advisor to help you discuss your plans for the future.

_________

Talking to a career advisor can help you understand what pathways you may be interested in and what routes you can take to reach them.

_________

You can also ease your anxiousness by exploring. You may find events that interest you that may not be related to your course. Although you may feel that you should stick to gaining experiences related to your specific course, this should not restrict you from exploring other interests. In expanding your experiences and understanding in different subjects of interests, you may find interlinks between courses and find careers you did not know existed before.

_________

Attending career fairs are a helpful way to introduce yourself to career opportunities.

_________

Career fairs help you decide what jobs you most definitely do not want to do or jobs you are more enthusiastic about. The university career fairs are always a great way to start!
