Upcoming Beat writers exhibition

Bookcover3 194x300 2

Following the successful The Art of Gregory Corso show hosted at the Oxmarket Contemporary Gallery in Chichester in 2021, the University of Chichester is delighted to work again with the gallery on the forthcoming exhibition, Burn Burn Burn: the Beats at the Ox, from 2 April to 14 April 2024.

Curated by Professors Dick Ellis and Hugo Frey, and with Martyn Bell, the exhibition explores the artistic and visual culture of the core Beat writers, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso. It also explores the important collaborations with Kerouac and other work by the photographer, Robert Frank, and will underline some of the unusual and unpredictable counter-cultural links between the Beats and West Sussex, which Burroughs visited and where Ginsberg came to pay tribute to the memory and visions of William Blake.

In partnership with the Oxmarket Contemporary and supported by BeatBooks and Aloes Press, among others, the exhibition opens a unique window on the multiple ways the Beat writers engaged with visual and aural media. The exhibition includes selections from their own work (including original pieces) and their ventures into the worlds of film, audio recordings, book cover design and associated ephemera of the transnational avant garde.

Entry is free, go to the Oxmarket Gallery for more information.
