Law student Lucy hopeful of ambitious barrister career after securing coveted mini-pupillage

A LAW student from the University of Chichester has secured a coveted position at a renowned legal firm as she bids to fulfil her lifelong ambition of becoming a barrister.

Undergraduate Lucy-Marie Garland, on the LLB Law degree, impressed lawyers from Pallant Chambers enough to be offered a mini-pupillage. The short internship is the legal industry’s most crucial form of work experience, and offers aspiring students a chance to familiarise themselves with the Bar in court and chambers.

Lucy-Marie, who is only the second person in her family to ever attend university, said: “I am overwhelmed to have been offered this opportunity. Law has always been my passion and being a barrister is what I have always wanted to do.”

Competition for the mini-pupillage was fierce, but it was thanks to Lucy-Marie’s determination and attitude which impressed the legal team at Pallant Chambers, after meeting at Supreme Court judge Lady Hale’s recent visit to the University.

Her tutor Dr Amy Elkington, who oversees the Law degree, added: “Lucy-Marie has long expressed an interest in becoming a barrister, and we congratulate her on achieving the desirable mini-pupillage. This opportunity will let her shadow the professionals and experience the Bar first-hand.”

The University’s three-year LLB Law degree is accredited by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and Bar Standards Board to prepare students for a career in the legal profession. It covers the seven vital core areas required to take the Solicitors’ Qualifying Examination, including Public, Criminal, Tort, Contract, Land, and EU law, alongside Equity and Trust.
