Dr Alison Green Chaplain

Alison Green is the University Chaplain.

I am the University Chaplain and my role is both pastoral and academic.

On the pastoral side, my main focus is being available to meet staff and students who contact me to discuss religious or personal interests or concerns. I am also a member of a number of committees, including the Research Ethics Committee, Prevent Group, Student Forum and I attend Academic Board.

On the academic side, I supervise students completing taught master’s degrees in Theology and teach on the Conservatoire’s undergraduate Professional Resilience Course.

I also arrange and lead occasional services in the Chapel and on campus, including the annual carol service and most recently the D-Day Memorial Service.

I have been University Chaplain since September 2017. Before that I spent most of my working life in the NHS as a Community Paediatrician based in Leigh Park, Havant. I left the NHS to attend Theological College in Cambridge for two years (2011 -2013), but was a part time student studying Theology here at Chichester between 2008-2011.
I spent four years as Curate at Chichester Cathedral (2013-2017) and then came to the university. I had really enjoyed studying here and was delighted when the Chaplain’s job came up.

I start work with morning prayer at 9am, and this is open to anyone who wants to join me on Teams. It is the one consistent feature in my day.

I am based on Bishop Otter campus, but spend time on Bognor Regis Campus each week. I attend meetings or meet students or staff and I am the University Governor for the Bourne Community College. Writing this I realise that there is no average day in my week.

What do I love most? I love the natural environment on both campuses. I love the music in the Chapel which is the normal background of my working day. I love the opportunity to work with and alongside the amazing staff and students here. I feel very fortunate to be Chaplain.

I am not sure that Chaplains have great achievements. If I have one perhaps it was to be in the right place and stage in my ministry in Chichester Diocese when the post came up, as the timings were perfect for me to be Chaplain here.
