University and NILE renews scholarship in memory of former student
The University of Chichester and NILE have renewed a scholarship for English language teachers in memory of a former student.
The NILE Masters in Professional Development for Language Education (MAPDLE) is validated by the University of Chichester. The full scholarship, launched in memory of alumna Erica Dirou (pictured below) who died in 2019, is awarded each calendar year to an English language teacher or teacher-trainer working in Egypt.
Senior Lecturer Francisco Melara Gutierrez, from the University’s Institute of Education, Health and Social Sciences, said: “We are very pleased to support NILE in honouring Erica and her family by contributing to Erica’s life goal of advancing English language education.”
The University of Chichester has been working with NILE for a number of years on the MA in Professional Development in Language Education (MAPDLE).
The West Sussex-based institution has a long history of training teachers, stretching back to 1839, making it one of the oldest higher education organisations in the UK. In 2020, it was also named a top-30 University by the Guardian Good University Guide.
MAPDLE Programme Leader Dr Jason Skeet, a Senior Trainer and Project Manager, said: “I’m really proud that NILE, with the support of the University of Chichester, is able to offer this scholarship. Everyone at NILE felt very strongly the need to do something to honour Erica’s memory.”
The scholarship will be for the full 180 credits of the programme, or fewer if accredited prior learning applies to the scholarship recipient. To apply, candidates must meet the entry requirements for the MAPDLE programme outlined on its website at www.nile-elt.com/catalog?pagename=MAProgramme.
Applicants must also be a teacher of English Language, or an ELT teacher trainer, working in Egypt in the year of application, and not in receipt of any other NILE or Chichester scholarship. Email registrar@nile-elt.com to request a MAPDLE application form.
This should be completed and returned by email along with copies of relevant academic and professional certificates and a 500-word statement detailing which modules appeal most and why a place on the NILE MA programme would support the student’s personal development.
Applications are now open and close on Monday 17th May. The winning applicant will be announced by NILE, the University of Chichester, and BC Egypt on 31st May and can begin the programme from July onwards.
