Dr Ann Nugent

About

Senior Lecturer in Dance, is a dance critic; writer and researcher of international standing.

Her research focuses on the choreography of William Forsythe and postmodern theory, and she has published some 50 articles and papers on this work.

She has also completed a single-author manuscript for publication. Her other area of specialisation involves writing about dance, and the theory of learning through understanding of knowledge in the body – and she is working on a book provisionally entitled Writing Dance.

Ann is a former dancer (with English National Ballet and Gothenburg Ballet).

She was editor of the ISTD’s Dance; founding editor of Dance Now and, subsequently, editor of Dance Theatre Journal.

She is currently British dance critic of Shinshokan Dance Magazine, Japan.

She has completed a research project entitled Expressionism in the Work of Kenneth Macmillan and William Forsythe for which she received an Arts and Humanities Research Board award.

Ann leads the MA in Performance: Dance Independent Research and coordinates the Dissertation module at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

She also teaches: Dance Journalism; Dance Criticism; Writing for Performance; Reflective Practice and Research Methodologies.
