About
Professor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science
Visiting Research Fellow (Department of Neuroimaging, King’s College London)
Co-founder, Clem Burke Drumming Project
Marcus is a Professor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science in the Institute of Applied Sciences, University of Chichester. A highly motivated academic with a proven track record of delivering excellence in pure and applied research, teaching and public engagement.
Appointed as a visiting research fellow in the world leading department of neuroimaging at King’s College London, Marcus has published world first research examining neuroplasticity in a variety of models including autism and elite sports performance. These collaborations have resulted in the publication of research in some of the world’s leading journals, together with the award of over £7 million in funding.
At the University of Chichester, Marcus is very active in all aspects of research, including post-graduate supervision and examination. Marcus is renowned for his mentorship and nurturing of junior colleagues.
Over the past 37 years Marcus’s ability to influence, stimulate and inspire others has been proven through applied sport science and research collaborations whilst working at the University of Chichester.
As England and Great Britain Boxing Sport Science and Medicine Manager (2000-2004) he was responsible for developing and overseeing the delivery of a scientific support system to elite boxers and coaches. This experience led him to set up and chair the first British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences special interest group focussed on weight classified athletes (2006-2008).
For the past decade Marcus has chaired a world leading research group examining the effect of drumming practice in Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC). This collaboration includes colleagues from King’s College London, University of Bonn and Brown University. Marcus is responsible for securing external research funding, project delivery and disseminating key findings.
Marcus is creative in relation to sharing research findings, as demonstrated by collaborating with 17 colleagues from the Institute of Sport (IOS) and Department of Digital and Creative Technologies (DDCT) to produce an animated video showcasing a drumming and autism project. Marcus has supported the IOS research strategy by setting up the Clem Burke Drumming Project, a dynamic research centre, which sits in the area of health and wellbeing.
Marcus contributed research papers in the recent IOS Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission and performed the role of internal REF reviewer. Marcus contributes to the IOS research seminar programme and PhD Student Development Programme.
Marcus supports the University of Chichester Post Graduate Research (PGR) training programme and PGR Annual Conference. Marcus is an Independent chair of PhD examinations and Internal PhD examiner. Marcus reviews ethics applications as part of the University Research and Innovation Committee.
Marcus has been external examiner for 4 PhD students; internal examiner for 10 PhD students and Independent chair for 5 PhD students. Marcus has had 4 successful PhD student completions and currently supervises 1 PhD student. Marcus has also been an external examiner for 3 MPhil students and mentor for 1 external MA student (awarded distinction).
Marcus enjoys sharing research findings with the public, such as at the 2023 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and supporting Owain Wyn Evans 24-hour Drumathon in 2021, which raised £4million for BBC Children in Need.
