Research
Research Interests:
- Water-based sports technique analysis (Swimming & Kayaking)
- Resistance exercise biomechanics and measurement of mechanical power output
- Concussion in sport
All my research has been accepted by international journals.
My longstanding work in kayaking is recognised with invitations to review articles. I have worked as a biomechanics consultant for the British Canoe Union Olympic Sprint Kayak racing team, have two PhD completions in kayaking and externally examined PhDs in the UK and overseas.
My interests in water-related research continues with the links with the British Sailing Team. This work formed part of an impact case study in REF2014 ‘Evidenced based practice to optimise the development and performance of world class and Olympic sailors’ and continued with my Director of Studies role for a PhD entitled ‘Benchmarking physical development of athletes within the British Sailing Team Olympic performance pathway’. The unit impact case studies in REF2014 scored 53% 4*, 36.7% 3* and 10% 2* demonstrating the International/world leading nature of this work.
Research income:
I have overall responsibility for income targets for my Institute.
At REF2014 there was an overall unit contribution of £584k and this has grown to a portfolio of research activities in excess of £5.6m (REF2021) under my leadership.
I project managed two Interreg 2 seas EU projects as evaluation partner (Step by Step ‘SBS – Men’s Sheds’ and Sexual Health in the over Forty Fives ‘SHIFT’ (value to UoC EURO +400k each and EURO +3million each with ERDF). I led UoC (Sport) joining the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership and NIHR funded MRes partnership with the Universities of Brighton and Kent in Health.
