About

Steven teaches a broad range of sociology courses, including social theory, analysing contemporary social issues and research methods. He has a particular interest in inclusion, alienation and inequality and has investigated this from economic (poverty analysis), social (loneliness and isolation) and political (political engagement) perspectives.

In addition to publishing in academic journals Steven has been commissioned to undertake applied sociological research for public and charitable bodies including UNSECO, the Welsh Government, The British Council, the Council of Europe, DEFRA, HEFCE, the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Government of Ghana.

Professional

Steven is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the Course Convener for BA Sociology and BA Sociology with Criminology.

Research

Steven’s current research is on how we create, agree, and contest meaning in social settings. He is studying games and sports as examples of social events in which have no intrinsic meaning, yet are able to successfully suspend their collective disbelief to create a meaningful experience.
