Overview

The programme is aimed at science and technology graduates who wish to extend and develop their skills to encompass a wider set of disciplines, as well as graduates who want to develop their careers in managerial roles in engineering or manufacturing or in the commercial enterprise in which they have chosen to work.

The programme is also aimed at experienced industry practitioners who wish to complement their academic knowledge and obtain professional recognition in key management areas in private industry or the public sector nationally and internationally.

At present, science and technology undergraduate degree programmes do not normally reflect the growing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary characteristics of the modern business enterprise.

However, many trained engineers possess a high degree of analytical problem-solving ability, which can be directly transposed to the business and enterprise environment.

Skills such as optimisation and simulation, for example, although developed specifically for mechanical or electrical engineering systems are equally relevant to enterprise or engineering business management.

A systems approach to problem solving which is developed in many undergraduate engineering programmes is also directly applicable to decision making at the strategic and enterprise level.

Teaching and Assessment

This course is taught in small, interactive seminar groups at our Tech Park.

The course is delivered through seminars, workshops, tutorials, computer labs, physical labs and project practical time. You will reinforce your theoretical learning with practical engineering tasks and have the opportunity to debate and discuss your experiences with peers in interactive seminars and tutorials.

Assessments

All assessments are case based involve individual, team work, report and presentations, promoting communication skills.

The Course

You will study a selection of core and optional modules in each year. Each module is delivered differently, depending on its content and focus of study.

This list is indicative and subject to change.

Individual Project

(60 credits)

Independent project work is an essential part of Master’s level programmes.

The work undertaken within this module will be an individual piece of work. The subject area of the project will be consistent with the philosophy and aims of the programme.

In all cases the student will be expected to demonstrate elements of independent thinking consistent with the expected research content of a Master’s level project.  The student should also demonstrate the ability to report on the project and to present in lay terms the concepts underpinning the work and results.

Research Methodology

Module equips students with perspectives in the philosophy, methodology, project planning and transferable skills such as presentation and communication skills, group working and report writing required to undertake effective scientific, engineering and management research.

Accounting, Finance and Business Planning

(15 credits)

Module aims to address the tight financial control and a forward view of costs and risks that are essential attributes of senior managers as the business environment becomes more austere and stakeholders become more discerning.  The module develops the critical financial sensitivity to cost accounting, risk assessment and forward cost management that is essential to senior managers responsible for complex programmes and businesses. The emphasis is on the financial understanding needed to underpin decisions in respect of resource and cost management while keeping risk at an acceptable level.

Technology Enterprise

(15 credits)

Module aims at providing students with the key critical knowledge necessary to successfully respond to new market opportunities created through technological innovations and evolution of engineering products and/or services. Mastering entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship are key skills for the leadership and management of change in both small and large organisations and are necessary attributes for survival and prosperity in today’s global competitive arenas.

Environmental Engineering & Sustainability

(15 credits)

This module aims at exposing students of diverse background specialisms to a wide range of environmental issues and challenges. Drawing on basic science and engineering principles it enables students to assess specific environmental problems and design solutions that reduce or eliminate their global and local environmental impacts at conceptual and practical levels. It will therefore enable the students to experience a number of different environmental threats, risks and issues and help them develop practical and commercially viable solutions to a wide range of environmental engineering subjects.

Strategy & Management

(15 credits)

The module aims at developing an in-depth understanding of the strategic vision and the decision-making process and the link with operational management. The knowledge and skills required for measuring competitiveness and the impact of the remote and operating environments and a critical understanding the boundaries and mechanics of the value chain. Understanding the role of stakeholders and the importance of issue handling, including corporate governance. Comprehending the importance of corporate culture, the certainty of change and options available in the competitive arena. In depth appreciation of the importance of strategic planning, management and control.

Supply Chain Management

(15 credits)

The module aims to  provide  students  with  a  broad  introduction  and  knowledge  of  logistics  and  supply  chain management for strategic and tactical decision; Develop an introductory understanding of the unified and comprehensive logistics management environment; Develop the students’ abilities to reflect on the mechanisms and integration of the internal and external supply chain; Develop the student’s critical appreciation of Information Technology Tools for implementing supply chain management techniques and its integration and synchronisation with the enterprise.

Global Engineering Theory & Practice

(15 credits)

This module is intended to provide postgraduate students with the key critical knowledge necessary for their successful employment within international and global technology-based organisations. Student will be able to analyse how the global market has evolved in recent years, the drivers for this change and what effects this has had in the structure and operation of technology-based organisations. Furthermore, the module aims at providing the student with an in-depth understanding of the general issues that guide global industrialisation and economic development thus building their confidence and skills, at a managerial level, and facilitating their mobility within the global professional marketplace.

Fundamentals of Design, Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering

(15 credits)

The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the range of expectation of Design, Industrial and Manufacturing processes. The subjects of study include the evolution of industrial engineering and its future directions, the concepts of modern product design approaches and product life cycles, total productivity and quality management, basic engineering economics, computerised labour standards, human-machine and labour interaction, Health & Safety, ergonomics, materials storage and handling and facilities planning.

Testimonials

John

Engineering graduate
The stuff I learned during my studies for this degree, secured me the senior post I now hold within this (large defence) company. My interview for the job was surprisingly focusing on the non-engineering content and the my successful responses were large due to my proficiency in management concepts that I learned while studying for this degree. Would have not managed otherwise.

Helen

Engineering graduate
I successfully managed to obtain financial backing to the tune of £950k to develop the prototype and bring to market a new luxury sports car, directly competing with brands such as McLaren 600LT!
