Rams Singh

Rams Singh is Programme Coordinator and Senior Lecturer in esports at the University of Chichester.

Tell us about your role at the university.

I am the Programme Co-ordinator and Senior Lecturer for BA (Hons) Esports and Sports Media at the University of Chichester. I am one of the main focal points for esports in the UK as I’ve been in the scene for 25-plus years, being multiple-time European and national champion at many games. I’ve been a professional player and staff advisor with Team Dignitas for 10 years, so I bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the students, to the lectures and staff members across the University.

When did you join and what brought you here?

I’ve been at the University for five years and I’m about to start my sixth year. Esports is relatively new in the world of academia, so to be given this opportunity has been an absolute honour.

What brought me here was the vision and the legwork done by the Head of the Creative Industries, Michael Holley, for this course. The fact that Michael went out a year before the course started in 2019 and met with esports industry professionals to get their views and ideas for this course, and who to this day still support the course, that passion showed me the vision for this course.

What’s an average day at work like for you?

There is never an average day here at the University. There is always something going on whether it’s with students or staff members.

The esports students/society compete in the University Leagues for their respective games which are most days of the week so it’s very different to just having one day a week like the physical sports do. I keep an eye on what happens whether they win or lose and ask them about the games etc to give and show support.

As I’m also a Level 2 Badminton Coach for Worcestershire/West Midlands, and I help students who play badminton for the University.

What do you love most about working at the University of Chichester?

Everything to be fair, the staff are amazing, creative and supportive of everything we’ve done with the course so far.

The students are amazing to work with. Just having this opportunity to take my passion and to do it as a job. It’s a dream to me.

What is your greatest achievement in your job or research?

Seeing those students graduate, seeing students from where they started to where they are now. To see them grow up in the time they are there at the University. To see them move on with their own lives and hope they find their sustainability.

Working with talented lecturers as we bring all the creative courses to life in the Creative Industries Department.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’ll always be grateful to Michael, the Creative Industries Department and University for giving me this opportunity.
